The Dolls were x-rayed by staff at Liverpool Royal Hospital over the road from my studio. The x-rays revealed the bodies, clothes and pins hidden by the wrappings.

X-rays and MRI scans of mummified humans have revealed amulets, false eyes, packing materials and disembodied organs without disturbing the delicate wrappings and remains.

This series of nine x-rays was originally exhibited in A3 lightboxes alongside The Dolls.

The Bald Floral Doll is one of nine dolls made in response to the mummified remains of a little girl in the Ancient Egyptian Gallery of Bolton Musuem. The dolls have been 'mummified' for her to carry into the afterlife. I was spending time with mummified animals in the storeroom too. The careful wrapping and old museum labels turned the animal remains into sacred objects and precious artefacts. It was a privilege to hold them in my hands.

Here are some pictures of The Dolls exhibited in the museum.

X-ray prints of The Dolls are also available to buy. See some pictures here.

A sample piece I made in response to the doll collection at Bolton Museum.

I bought a cow's knee joint (I think) from the butcher and boiled it to remove the meat and sinew. I used the bones in this and the torso sample. I was thinking about the hard and soft materials used to make dolls, the stuffing and the china, the insides and the outsides. And how the broken dolls said more to me than the pristine ones. And how we're not supposed to see inside their/our bodies. And when we do, it's shocking.

I decided animal bones weren't right and ended up using human bones.

Approx 15 x 9 x 6cm

Sawdust, calico, vintage fabric, thread, cow's bone.
